[EN] Desperate Curators: Paulina Brelińska, Patrycja Ekk-Cierniakowska i Daria Grabowska (”In Every Legend There Is a Grain of Truth,“ 2018): Bearing in mind the iconic nature of this event, as the curators of this year’s edition of Presentations, we wandet to explore the history of this region focusing on folklore. Dr. Bronisław Świderski devoted a close attention to the legends of the Leszno region in the publication ”Illustrated Description of Leszno Region” (in Polish), which this year celebrates its 90th anniversary of the first edition. This author is still alive in the memory of the dwellers of this area. A large part of the folk tales described in the publication refers to literary heroes recognisable in the consciousness of Poles, such as Master Twardowski (legend about Twardowski’s treasures) or Queen Jadwiga (also known as Hedwig) (legend about the source of St. Hedwig). The essence of legends, what distinguishes them from fairy tales, is the reference to historical facts. Hence the saying: ”In every legend there is a grain of truth”. This dichotomous division into truth and fiction inspired us to create the slogan ”A Grain of Truth”. Contemporary art is undoubtedly a vehicle for legends, and the long tradition and history of Presentations make the event legendary. In this way, we intend to confront the past and the present, to show the reflections of old legends in the here and now.
